Monica Lopez
Mónica López (Guayaquil, Ecuador) studied Visual Arts at the Instituto Tecnológico de las Artes del Ecuador (ITAE) and earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of the Arts in 2019, specializing in Pictorial Poetics and Digital Media. She has held solo exhibitions including 55 Cancri e (DPM, 2019) and Terra Incógnita (Museum of Anthropology and Contemporary Art, 2023). Her work has been featured in group exhibitions in Ecuador and internationally, including South Korea, Spain, and Chile, and has been published by as Parelaje (Ecuador), New Media Art (South Korea), and Hoax Publications (United Kingdom). In 2024, she was selected for the Art and Culture Outreach Program of the 27th Ecuadorian Antarctic Expedition. In 2025, she participated as an artist in the 17th Cuenca Biennial.
I work with formats associated with scientific, documentary, and archival forms of record-keeping, pushing against their conventions to reveal the desire that underlies them. Materially, I shift these images from one representational regime to another, allowing their very facture to obscure their provenance and oscillate between document and reconstruction. These representational devices participate in the construction of dominant archetypes and idealized visions of the environment, projecting comforting illusions that transform natural spaces into consumable fictions shaped by contemporary perceptions of value and desire.
