Florence Penry-Jones (Ireland / UK)
Florence Penry-Jones is a multi-disciplinary artist, investigating social and inter-social relationships often beginning with stories and experiences from her familial history, in particular, her mother. She utilises a variety of media to communicate the transience of both the memory and the materiality that those stories provoke within.
She grew up surrounded by wildlife deep in the countryside, often disappearing into her own world while in the woods, making up stories about what and who that would live within that which we can't see. Through this early solitude she became inspired by the uncanny, the natural environment and 80s dark fantasy.
She found that she would fall into the worlds of movies such as Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, more recently podcasts such as Uncanny on BBC. Influenced by this, she works across an array of mediums and materials such as glass, bronze, installation and printmaking investigating that strange thread that flows through them all.
